The journey

Route & Real-World Timing from Sidcup

Distance and drive time

  • Distance: 36.3 miles from Sidcup station to Gatwick's South Terminal. The North Terminal is a short way further on its own spur.
  • Clear-road time: about 44 minutes. That's what you get late at night, very early in the morning or on a quiet Sunday.
  • Typical weekday off-peak: I plan for 55–60 minutes.

The route, step by step

  1. A222 out of Sidcup (from the High Street or station area) to join the A20.
  2. A20 Sidcup Bypass heading south-east past Foots Cray and Ruxley towards Swanley.
  3. M25 Junction 3 (Swanley), joining the anticlockwise carriageway.
  4. M25 anticlockwise, J4 to J7: Badgers Mount (J4), Sevenoaks/Chipstead (J5), Godstone (J6), then Merstham (J7), where the M23 begins.
  5. M23 south to Junction 9. The section from J8 to J10 is a smart motorway, so the gantry limits can change.
  6. Into the airport: the South Terminal is signed straight off the J9 roundabout. The North Terminal is via the J9a spur. Airlines are split between the two terminals, so I check your flight number when I confirm the booking. Nobody should be finding that out on the motorway.

Starting from Sidcup means we skip the A2 and the Junction 2 merge at Darenth altogether, and that's one of the busier spots on this side of the M25.

Where it slows down, and the buffers I add

  • Crittall's Corner (A20/A211/A223, near Ruxley). This is the first place a morning run can lose time. Local traffic from the A211 and A223 meets the Bypass here. In the weekday morning peak I add 5–10 minutes.
  • The A20 approach to J3 Swanley. The approach and the Swanley interchange get heavy when M20 traffic is also joining the M25. Allow another 5–10 minutes at peak.
  • J5, where the M26 merges. Traffic from the M26 joins the anticlockwise lanes, and the lane-changing often causes stop-start running, even outside rush hour. I usually build in 5 minutes at busy times.
  • J6 Godstone to J7 Merstham. This is the stretch I watch most closely. The M23 slip often queues back onto the main carriageway in both peaks. I allow 15–20 minutes here at peak.
  • Friday afternoons and summer Saturdays. Holiday traffic builds early, so I add 20–30 minutes in total.
  • Coming back. Clockwise, the Dartford Crossing queue often stretches past J2 towards J3 from around 15:30 on weekdays. Sidcup is on the A20, so on the way home I come off at J3 and avoid that queue completely.

Time we allow, by departure window

Weekdays 15:30–19:0070–80 min
Friday from 13:00 / summer Saturdays70–80 min

Worked example: choosing your pickup time

Say you're flying short-haul at 10:40 on a Thursday. Gatwick advises arriving 2 hours before short-haul departures, so you want to be at the terminal by 08:40. Leaving Sidcup at around 07:20 puts you in the morning-peak window, so I'd allow the full 80 minutes. That makes 07:20 your pickup time, from Lamorbey, Blackfen or wherever you are.

For a long-haul flight at the same time, Gatwick's advice is 3 hours, so you'd need to arrive by 07:40. A 06:40 pickup sits in the 06:00–07:00 window. I'd still allow a full hour rather than 55 minutes, because the peak starts just as we reach the M25.

Gatwick Terminal Drop-Off Rules 2026

The drop-off zones

  • North Terminal: lower level, between the Sofitel and the multi-storey car park.
  • South Terminal: lower level. Follow the "Drop Off" signs on the approach road.
  • There are no barriers at either terminal. ANPR cameras record every vehicle that enters and leaves.

What it costs

The charges have applied at both terminals since 6 January 2026:

  • £10 for the first 10 minutes
  • £1 per minute after that
  • a £30 daily maximum, with a 30-minute maximum stay

How it's paid, and what happens if it isn't

The charge must be paid online or by phone on 0330 174 4503 by midnight the day after the visit. If it goes unpaid, Times24, which runs the scheme, issues a Parking Charge Notice (PCN).

Included in your fare

The drop-off charge is already in the fare we quote you. We pay it, you never get a separate bill, and no PCN will turn up at your address weeks later.

Blue Badge holders

Blue Badge holders are exempt, but the vehicle has to be pre-registered with Times24 before the journey. If you mention it when you book, we'll send you the car's registration so you can register it.

If you'd rather have a friend drop you off than use a taxi, the Long Stay car parks give 2 hours free, with a free shuttle bus to the terminals.

Arrivals pickup

For the trip home I track your flight, so if you land early or late I just change the time I arrive. The fare stays the same. You get 60 minutes' free waiting from touchdown, which usually covers passport control and the baggage hall. I can meet you with a name board if you ask. The evening before, we send the driver's name, car and registration.

Taxi or train

Taxi vs Train from Sidcup to Gatwick

The rail option

  • Sidcup to London Bridge on Southeastern's Sidcup line: typically 25–30 minutes.
  • Thameslink from London Bridge to Gatwick Airport: typically 30–35 minutes.
  • Door to terminal: typically 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, including getting to Sidcup station and the change at London Bridge.

These are typical times only. Check National Rail or TfL on the day, especially at weekends when engineering work is common.

Gatwick's station is beside the South Terminal. If you're flying from the North Terminal, add the free inter-terminal shuttle.

When the taxi makes more sense

  • You've got luggage. Large cases on the London Bridge platforms, a buggy or a car seat all make the change hard work. In the car, your bags go in the boot outside your house and come out at the drop-off zone.
  • You're travelling as a group. Split the fixed fare and the cost per person comes down quickly:
    • Saloon (sedan) £72 ÷ 4 = £26.50 each
    • MPV £81 ÷ 6 = about £25.83 each
    • 8-seater £108 ÷ 7 = about £26.29 each
    • 9-seater minibus £115 ÷ 8 = about £24.13 each
    • Your flight leaves early. A 06:00 departure means being at the terminal around 04:00, before you can count on a train from Sidcup with a connection at London Bridge. Our fare is the same at 03:00 as it is at noon.
    • You land late. If your flight comes in close to midnight, the last trains may already have gone. I'll be waiting either way.
    • The line is closed. Weekend works on the Sidcup line or through London Bridge can take the train out of the picture. By road there's nearly always another way round.

If you're travelling alone with hand luggage on a midday flight, the train works well. For families, groups, heavy bags or anything before dawn, the taxi is the safer choice.

Good to know

Sidcup to Gatwick Airport taxi — questions

How much is a taxi from Sidcup to Gatwick Airport?

From £72 one way in a saloon (sedan) for up to four passengers, fixed when you book. An executive car is from £97, an MPV from £81, an 8-seater from £108 and a 9-seater minibus from £115. The Gatwick drop-off charge is included.

How long does it take to get from Sidcup to Gatwick Airport?

Usually 50–80 min for about 36 miles. Early mornings are at the quick end, weekday peaks at the slow end, and we plan your pickup with that margin.

Which terminal will you drop me at?

The one your airline uses. We check it from your flight number, and the Gatwick drop-off charge is included.

Can you pick me up from Gatwick Airport and take me to Sidcup?

Yes, at any hour. Give us your flight number and we track it, with 60 minutes' free waiting from touchdown.

Are child seats and larger vehicles available?

Yes. Child seats and boosters are free, and we have MPVs, 8-seaters and 9-seater minibuses, plus executive Mercedes cars. Tell us when you book.

Is the price fixed from Sidcup?

Yes. The fare is agreed before you travel and does not change with traffic, the time of day or delays at the airport.

EES and your airport transfer

How early should I get to a European airport for my flight home?

ABTA advises arriving at least two hours before departure, because the EES exit check can add time at busy airports.

My flight home might land late because of EES queues. What happens to my transfer?

Give your flight number when you book, so the driver can follow the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one.

How does EES affect the 90/180-day rule?

EES records every entry and exit digitally instead of relying on passport stamps, so days spent in the Schengen area are counted automatically and overstays are flagged.

Do I need ETIAS as well?

Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.

EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the EU Travel to Europe site before you travel.
