The Route: Bexley to Gatwick, Road by Road
Distance and clear-road time
- Distance: about 38 miles from Bexley station or Bexley High Street to the South Terminal forecourt. North Terminal adds roughly a mile.
- Clear-road time: 45–50 minutes, which you get between about 22:00 and 05:30 or on a quiet Sunday morning.
- Typical weekday daytime: 55–70 minutes.
The roads we use
- A223 Bourne Road to the A2. We join the A2 eastbound at the Black Prince interchange. It is the quickest way out of Old Bexley and avoids the Bexleyheath Broadway traffic.
- A2 Rochester Way / Dartford Bypass for about 4 miles, to M25 Junction 2 (Darenth Interchange).
- M25 anticlockwise (heading south, then west) from J2 to J7. This is about 26 miles past Swanley (J3), Badgers Mount (J4), the M26 split at Sevenoaks (J5), Godstone (J6) and Merstham (J7).
- M23 southbound from J7 to J9. About 9 miles. The J8–J10 stretch is a smart motorway with variable speed limits.
- J9 airport spur. The South Terminal is reached directly from the J9 roundabout. The North Terminal is via the spur to J9a. We check your terminal from the flight number before we set off. easyJet, BA and other airlines are split between terminals, so we never assume.
Alternative route: A20 to Swanley
When the A2 approach to Junction 2 is jammed, the driver takes the A20 Sidcup Bypass east to Swanley and joins the M25 at Junction 3. It is a similar distance and skips the Darenth merge entirely. The driver decides on the morning, based on live traffic.
Where time is lost, and how much to allow
- The A2 into Darenth Interchange (M25 J2), 07:00–09:30. Traffic from Bexleyheath, Crayford and the Dartford Crossing approach all merges here. Allow an extra 10–15 minutes on weekday mornings.
- M25 J3 Swanley. The M20 traffic coming up from Kent merges into the anticlockwise carriageway. It is slow from about 07:00 and again from 16:00.
- The M26 merge at J5 (Sevenoaks). Traffic coming off the M26 from Maidstone joins the M25 just before the long climb towards Westerham. Lane-hopping at this merge causes stop-start traffic, even outside the peaks.
- M25 J6 Godstone to J7 Merstham. This is the most reliable bottleneck on the trip. The M23 slip at J7 regularly backs up into lane 1 during both rush hours. Allow 15–20 minutes here between 07:00–09:30 and 16:00–19:00.
- Coming home: the Dartford Crossing queue. On the return, the M25 clockwise towards J2 often backs up from the crossing from about 15:30 on weekdays. It can stretch back past J3. In that case we leave at J3 and take the A20 back towards Sidcup and Bexley.
- Fridays and summer Saturdays. Holiday traffic for Gatwick and the Channel ports builds from early morning. Allow an extra 20–30 minutes.
Buffers we use when setting pickup times:
| Departure window | What we allow |
|---|---|
| 04:00–06:00 | 45–50 minutes |
| 06:00–07:00 | 55 minutes |
| Weekday 07:00–09:30 | 75–80 minutes |
| Weekday 10:00–15:00 | 55–60 minutes |
| Weekday 15:30–19:00 | 75–80 minutes |
| Fridays from 13:00, summer Saturdays | 70–80 minutes |
Gatwick advises being at the terminal 2 hours before short-haul flights and 3 hours before long-haul. For a 10:30 flight to Spain, that means at the terminal by 08:30. On a weekday, that puts your Bexley pickup at about 07:10.
At Gatwick: Terminal Drop-Off Rules for 2026
Where we stop
- North Terminal: The drop-off zone is on the lower level of the forecourt, between the Sofitel hotel and the multi-storey car park. You walk straight into departures from there.
- South Terminal: The drop-off zone is on the lower-level forecourt, signed "Drop Off" from the terminal approach road.
- Neither zone has barriers. Number-plate cameras log every car as it enters and leaves.
What Gatwick charges
Since 6 January 2026, Gatwick has charged £10 for the first 10 minutes in either terminal's drop-off zone. After that it charges £1 per additional minute, with a daily maximum of £30. The maximum stay is 30 minutes. The charge is paid online, by phone or through a registered AutoPay account, by midnight the day after the visit. An unpaid charge brings a Parking Charge Notice.
The drop-off charge is already in your Taxi On The Go fare. We settle it with Gatwick ourselves, so you won't see a separate bill, and you can't get a fine for a charge you didn't know about. A normal drop-off with cases unloaded takes under 5 minutes, well inside the first £10 window.
Blue Badge holders: forecourt drop-off is free, but the vehicle must be registered with Gatwick's operator (Times24) before the trip. Tell us when you book and we'll give you our vehicle registration.
Picking you up on the way back
We follow your flight and send the driver for the actual landing time. Your 60 minutes' free waiting starts at touchdown. The driver waits in the short-stay car park, texts you the exact meeting point, and can meet you in arrivals with a name board if you ask. You pay no car park charge either way.
How the Train Compares
The rail route
- Bexley station (Southeastern, Sidcup line) to London Bridge: about 25–30 minutes, via Sidcup and Lewisham.
- Change at London Bridge to a Thameslink service to Gatwick Airport: about 30–35 minutes.
- Total door-to-terminal: typically 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. That includes getting to Bexley station, the connection at London Bridge, and the walk from Gatwick's station. The station is beside the South Terminal; North Terminal passengers take the free shuttle transit on top.
When a taxi makes more sense
- Luggage. London Bridge is one of the busiest interchanges in the country. Moving between platforms with two large cases and a child at 08:00 is hard work. A taxi loads at your door and unloads at the terminal.
- Groups. Four adult rail fares to Gatwick usually cost more than a shared fixed fare. In our saloon (sedan) from £72 or MPV from £81, the price per head drops with every extra passenger.
- Early flights. A 06:00 departure means being at Gatwick around 04:00, before the rail connections from Bexley line up. Night and early-morning pickups cost the same as daytime with us.
- Late arrivals. A delayed evening flight can miss the last useful connections home. We track the flight and wait.
- No transfers to miss. Engineering works and weekend closures on the Sidcup line or through London Bridge are common. The road route has a fallback, via the A20 or the M25 alternatives, and the rail route has none.
The train is a fair choice for one person travelling light in the middle of the day. For everyone else, and for anyone flying before 07:00, door-to-door is the more reliable option.

EES and your airport transfer
How early should I get to a European airport for my flight home?
ABTA advises arriving at least two hours before departure, because the EES exit check can add time at busy airports.
My flight home might land late because of EES queues. What happens to my transfer?
Give your flight number when you book, so the driver can follow the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one.
How does EES affect the 90/180-day rule?
EES records every entry and exit digitally instead of relying on passport stamps, so days spent in the Schengen area are counted automatically and overstays are flagged.
Do I need ETIAS as well?
Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.
EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the EU Travel to Europe site before you travel.
