Route and Real-World Timing from Bexleyheath
How far, and how long
- Distance: roughly 38.7 miles from Bexleyheath Broadway or the station to the South Terminal. The North Terminal is a little further along the spur.
- Empty-road time: about 47 minutes. Expect this late in the evening, overnight, or early on a Sunday.
- Ordinary weekday, mid-morning or early afternoon: plan on 55–60 minutes.
The roads, in order
- Out of the town centre on the A221/A207, then onto the A220 heading south. This keeps us off the slow stretch through the shops and gets us to the A2 quickly.
- A2 east towards Dartford, as far as M25 Junction 2 (Darenth).
- M25 anticlockwise from J2 to J7. You pass Swanley (J3), Badgers Mount (J4), Sevenoaks/Chipstead (J5) and Godstone (J6) before the M23 junction at Merstham (J7).
- M23 south, J7 to J9. Between J8 and J10 this is a smart motorway, so expect variable speed limits on the gantries.
- Junction 9 for the airport. The South Terminal comes straight off the J9 roundabout. The North Terminal is reached on the J9a spur. Airlines are split between the two terminals, so I check your flight number before I leave, not on the motorway.
Back-up route: A20 Sidcup Bypass to Junction 3
If the A2 is solid towards Darenth, I head west instead and take the A20 Sidcup Bypass out to Swanley, joining the M25 at J3. That misses the Junction 2 merge altogether. I decide which way to go on the day, using live traffic, before you are in the car.
The usual slow spots, and what to allow
- A2 merge into M25 J2, weekday mornings. Traffic from the Bexleyheath side and the Dartford approach all joins here. Allow 10–15 minutes extra between about 07:00 and 09:30.
- J3 Swanley. M20 traffic from Kent merges onto the anticlockwise carriageway. It is typically sluggish in both rush hours.
- J5 Sevenoaks. M26 traffic joins here. Drivers changing lanes at the merge cause stop-start traffic, even in the middle of the day.
- J6 Godstone to the J7 M23 slip. This is the hold-up I plan around most. In both peaks the slip road for the M23 regularly queues back into the inside lane. Allow 15–20 minutes for this stretch at peak times.
- Friday afternoons and summer Saturdays. Airport and holiday traffic builds early, so I add 20–30 minutes.
- The drive home. Going clockwise, the queue for the Dartford Crossing often backs up past J2 towards J3 from around 15:30 on weekdays. When it does, I leave at J3 and come back along the A20 through Sidcup to Bexleyheath.
Journey time we allow, by departure window
| Leaving Bexleyheath | Time allowed to Gatwick |
|---|---|
| 04:00–06:00 | 47–50 min |
| 06:00–07:00 | 55 min |
| Weekdays 07:00–09:30 | 75–80 min |
| Weekdays 10:00–15:00 | 55–60 min |
| Weekdays 15:30–19:00 | 75–80 min |
| Friday from 13:00 / summer Saturdays | 70–80 min |
A worked example
Say you're on a long-haul flight at 12:15 on a Wednesday. Gatwick advises arriving 3 hours before long-haul (and 2 hours before short-haul), so you need to be at the terminal by 09:15. If you leave around 07:55, you're inside the morning-peak window, so I allow 80 minutes. That puts your pickup on Broadway at 07:55, and I'd suggest 07:50 so your cases go in without any rush. For a short-haul flight at the same time you'd be due at the terminal by 10:15. That means leaving after the peak, so a pickup at about 09:15 is enough.
Gatwick Terminal Drop-Off Rules for 2026
Where you're dropped
- North Terminal: the drop-off zone is on the lower level, between the Sofitel and the multi-storey car park.
- South Terminal: also on the lower level. Follow the "Drop Off" signs off the approach road.
- Neither zone has barriers. ANPR cameras read every number plate on the way in and out.
The charges
From 6 January 2026, both terminals charge:
- £10 for the first 10 minutes
- £1 for each extra minute after that
- a daily maximum of £30, with a maximum stay of 30 minutes
You pay online, by phone on 0330 174 4503 or through an AutoPay account, by midnight the day after your visit. If it isn't paid, a Parking Charge Notice follows, issued by Times24.
With us the charge is included in your fare. We settle it ourselves, you never get a separate bill, and there's no risk of a PCN arriving at your home weeks later.
Blue Badge holders don't pay the charge, but the vehicle must be pre-registered with Times24 before the trip. Tell us when you book and we'll give you the car's registration.
If you'd rather avoid the forecourt, Gatwick's Long Stay car parks give 2 hours free, with a free shuttle bus to the terminals.
Coming home: arrivals pickup
I track your flight, so a delay or an early landing changes when I turn up, not what you pay. You get 60 minutes' free waiting from touchdown. That's enough for passport control and the baggage belt. If you ask, I'll meet you in arrivals with a name board. The night before, you'll get a confirmation with the driver's name, car and registration.
Taxi or Train from Bexleyheath?
The rail route
- Bexleyheath station to London Bridge on the Southeastern Bexleyheath line: typically 25–30 minutes.
- Thameslink from London Bridge to Gatwick Airport: typically 30–35 minutes.
- Door to terminal: typically 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, counting the walk to the station and the change.
These are typical times. Check National Rail or TfL on the day, especially at weekends.
Gatwick station sits beside the South Terminal. For the North Terminal you add a ride on the free inter-terminal shuttle.
When the taxi is better value
- Heavy luggage. Changing platforms at London Bridge with large cases, a pushchair or a child seat is hard work. In the car, your bags stay in the boot from your drive to the drop-off zone.
- Travelling as a group. Our fixed fares divide neatly between passengers:
- Saloon (sedan) £72 ÷ 4 = £29 each
- MPV £81 ÷ 6 = about £26.67 each
- 8-seater £108 ÷ 7 = about £28.14 each
- 9-seater minibus £115 ÷ 8 = about £25.63 each
- Early departures. For a 06:30 flight you need to be at the terminal around 04:30. That's too early to count on a train out of Bexleyheath and a change at London Bridge. We charge the same at that hour as at midday.
- Late landings. A delayed flight landing near midnight can leave you with no way home by train. I watch the arrival time and wait.
- Engineering works. Weekend closures on the line or through London Bridge can wipe out the rail option. On the road there's always the A20 if the A2 is blocked.
If you're on your own with a cabin bag and flying in the middle of the day, the train will get you there. For families, groups and early flights, the taxi is the safer bet.

EES and your airport transfer
How early should I get to a European airport for my flight home?
ABTA advises arriving at least two hours before departure, because the EES exit check can add time at busy airports.
My flight home might land late because of EES queues. What happens to my transfer?
Give your flight number when you book, so the driver can follow the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one.
How does EES affect the 90/180-day rule?
EES records every entry and exit digitally instead of relying on passport stamps, so days spent in the Schengen area are counted automatically and overstays are flagged.
Do I need ETIAS as well?
Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.
EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the EU Travel to Europe site before you travel.
