Route and Real-World Timing
The numbers
- Distance: 59.3 miles from Bexleyheath Broadway to the Terminal 5 forecourt via the M25.
- Clear-road time: about 68 minutes. That is late evening, the small hours, or an empty Sunday.
- Ordinary weekday: expect longer. The buffer table further down shows what we actually plan for.
Road by road from the Broadway
- A221 / A207 out of Bexleyheath and onto the A220, heading for the A2.
- A2 eastbound along the Dartford side to M25 Junction 2 (Darenth).
- M25 anticlockwise from J2, past J3 Swanley (M20), J4 Badgers Mount, J5 Sevenoaks (M26), J6 Godstone, J7 Merstham (M23), J8 Reigate, J9 Leatherhead, J10 Wisley (A3), J11 Chertsey, J12 Thorpe (M3) and J13 Staines.
- Off at the junction for your terminal (see below), checked against your flight number before we leave.
Which exit for which terminal
- Terminals 4 and 5: Junction 14. We come off onto the A3113 Airport Way. Terminal 5 has its own spur; Terminal 4 is signed from the same exit.
- Terminals 2 and 3: Junction 15. We take the M4 east to Junction 4, then the airport spur and the central tunnel into the middle of the airport.
- Terminal 1 is closed. If an old booking or confirmation mentions it, check with your airline.
The cross-London option, and when we use it
The A2 to the A205 South Circular, across to Kew, then the A4/M4 is only about 37 miles, but in normal traffic it takes around 90 minutes. We only use it late at night, when the South Circular is empty or the M25 has an overnight closure. The route is inside the ULEZ; our cars are compliant, so there is no extra charge either way.
Where the M25 loses time
These are the places that typically slow a Bexleyheath to Heathrow run. We plan around every one.
- The A2 into J2, weekday mornings. Local traffic and Dartford Crossing traffic squeeze into the same slip. Allow an extra 10–15 minutes.
- J3 Swanley. M20 traffic joins from the Kent side; slow in both peaks.
- J5, where the M26 comes in. Merging and lane changes cause stop-start traffic.
- J6 to J7 and the M23 slip. Busy morning and evening.
- J8 Reigate Hill. Heavy vehicles slow the climb.
- J10 Wisley (A3). Usually the worst stretch on the trip, especially weekday mornings and Friday afternoons. Allow 15–20 minutes at those times.
- J12 M3 merge and J13–J15 around Heathrow in the morning peak, when airport staff, freight and passengers all arrive together.
- Coming home (clockwise): from about 15:30 on weekdays, the Dartford Crossing queue often reaches back past J2 towards J3. We leave at J3 and come back along the A20, or use the local exits at J2.
Pickup buffers we work to
| Leaving Bexleyheath | Time we allow to the terminal |
|---|---|
| 22:00–05:30 | 70–75 minutes |
| 05:30–06:30 | 80–90 minutes |
| Weekday 06:30–09:30 | 100–110 minutes |
| Weekday 10:00–15:00 | 80–85 minutes |
| Weekday 15:30–19:00 | 100–110 minutes |
| Fridays from 13:00, summer Saturdays | 100–110 minutes |
Worked example: an 11:00 long-haul from Terminal 5
Say your airline wants you at the terminal 3 hours before a long-haul departure. For an 11:00 flight from T5 on a Tuesday, you need to be on the forecourt by 08:00.
- You reach J10 Wisley and J13–J14 in the morning peak, so we budget the upper end of the range.
- Pickup: 06:10 from Bexleyheath, giving 1 hour 50 minutes for the drive.
For a T3 departure, add the short run from J15 along the M4 and through the tunnel. We'd bring that pickup forward to about 06:00.
Heathrow Terminal Drop-Off Rules for 2026
How each terminal forecourt is reached
- Terminal 2: off Constellation Way, up the ramp to departures.
- Terminal 3: via Cosmopolitan Way onto Camborne Road, which has four lanes at the kerb.
- Terminal 4: via Stratford Road, with three lanes at the top of the ramp.
- Terminal 5: via Wayfarer Road, with two lanes at the top of the ramp, so it fills quickly at busy times.
- Terminal 1: closed.
The charge
Since 1 January 2026, every terminal forecourt carries a £7 charge per visit, with a maximum stay of 10 minutes. It applies to taxis and private hire cars, not just private drivers.
- Payment: online through the APCOA portal or by phone on 0330 008 5600, by 23:59 the following day. You cannot pay at the terminal.
- If it isn't paid: an £80 Penalty Charge Notice, reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days.
- Free alternative: the Long Stay car parks give 30 minutes free, with a transfer bus to the terminal.
With us, the £7 is included in your fare. We settle it ourselves, you get no separate bill, and there's no chance of a PCN landing on you afterwards. Unloading cases and saying goodbye fits comfortably inside the 10 minutes.
Blue Badge holders can get a 100% discount, but it has to be applied for in advance, for each drop-off. Mention it when you book and we'll give you the vehicle details you need.
Arrivals: picking you up
We track your flight, so a delay or an early landing doesn't cost you anything. Waiting is free for 60 minutes from touchdown, which covers passport control and baggage reclaim. The driver messages you with the meeting point, and a name board in arrivals is available on request.
Bexleyheath to Heathrow by Train
The usual rail routes
All times below are typical. Check National Rail and TfL on the day, as engineering work is common at weekends.
- Via London Bridge: Southeastern from Bexleyheath station on the Bexleyheath line to London Bridge (about 25–30 minutes), Thameslink to Farringdon, then the Elizabeth line west to Heathrow.
- Via Abbey Wood: there's no direct train from Bexleyheath to Abbey Wood, so you take a bus or change trains to reach it. From Abbey Wood the Elizabeth line reaches Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 in roughly 60–70 minutes. Some trains run through; others need a change at Paddington.
- Heathrow Express: from Paddington, about 15 minutes to the airport, at a premium fare.
- Door to terminal: typically 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, with at least one change, plus the walk to Bexleyheath station at the start.
When the taxi is the better choice
- Cost per head in a group. Our fixed fares split well: the saloon (sedan) at £82 works out at £30 each for four. The MPV at £92 is under £28 each for six. The 9-seater at £131 is £25.63 each for eight.
- Bags and children. Carrying cases through London Bridge and Farringdon at rush hour, then down to the Elizabeth line platforms, is the hardest part of the trip by rail. In a car, the cases go in the boot outside your house and come out at the terminal.
- Early departures. For a 07:00 flight you're leaving home before the useful rail connections start. Our fare is the same at any hour.
- Late landings. If a delayed evening arrival means missing the last convenient trains back to Bexleyheath, our driver will still be waiting.
Travelling alone with a small bag at midday, the train is a reasonable choice. Otherwise, door to door is simpler.

EU Entry/Exit System (EES): what travellers ask
How early should I get to a European airport for my flight home?
ABTA advises arriving at least two hours before departure, because the EES exit check can add time at busy airports.
My flight home might land late because of EES queues. What happens to my transfer?
Give your flight number when you book, so the driver can follow the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one.
Does EES registration cost anything?
No. EES registration is free and happens at the border. Be wary of websites that charge for "EES registration"; there is nothing to buy in advance.
Do I need ETIAS as well?
Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.
EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the EU Travel to Europe site before you travel.
