Route and Real-World Timing
The numbers
- Distance: 58.6 miles from Bexley station to the Terminal 5 forecourt via the M25.
- Clear-road time: about 67 minutes. You get that late in the evening, overnight, or early on a Sunday.
- Inside the ULEZ? Only on the cross-London alternative. Our cars are compliant either way.
The M25 run, junction by junction
- A223 Bourne Road out of Old Bexley to the A2, joining at the Black Prince interchange.
- A2 east to M25 Junction 2 (Darenth).
- M25 anticlockwise, which takes us south, then west:
- J3 Swanley (M20/A20)
- J4 Badgers Mount (A21)
- J5 Sevenoaks/Chipstead (M26/A21)
- J6 Godstone (A22)
- J7 Merstham (M23)
- J8 Reigate (A217)
- J9 Leatherhead (A243)
- J10 Wisley (A3)
- J11 Chertsey
- J12 Thorpe (M3)
- J13 Staines (A30)
- Off at the right junction for your terminal. We check this against your flight number when you book.
Which exit for which terminal
- Terminals 4 and 5: leave at J14 onto the A3113 Airport Way. T5 has its own spur. For T4 we follow Stratford Road up to the forecourt.
- Terminals 2 and 3: stay on to J15, take the M4 east to J4, then the airport spur through the central tunnel into the middle of the airport.
- Terminal 1 is closed.
Why we don't go through London
Through south London is shorter: A2 → A205 South Circular → Kew → A4/M4, about 37.5 miles. The trouble is the South Circular. Traffic lights, school runs and bus stops make it around 90 minutes in normal traffic, slower than the motorway despite being 20 miles shorter. We only use it late at night, when the lights are green and the M25 has overnight roadworks or a closure.
Where the time goes
These are the places that regularly slow the anticlockwise run. They are typical patterns, not guarantees.
- The A2 merge into J2, weekday mornings. Bexleyheath, Crayford and Dartford Crossing traffic all meet here. Allow an extra 10 minutes from about 07:00.
- J3 and J5. M20 traffic joins at Swanley and M26 traffic joins at Sevenoaks. Lane-changing at both causes stop-start traffic.
- J6 to J7 and the M23 slip at Merstham. Slow in both peaks, as Gatwick and Brighton traffic peels off. Allow 10–15 minutes.
- J8 Reigate Hill. Lorries slow on the climb and lanes bunch behind them.
- J10 Wisley (A3). The worst point on the whole trip. It is slowest on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons, when Guildford and Portsmouth traffic crosses the M25. Allow 15–20 minutes at those times.
- J12 Thorpe (M3). M3 traffic merges just before Heathrow. Allow another 10 minutes in the morning peak.
- J13 to J15. The last few miles around the airport bunch up in the morning peak. For T2/T3, the M4 detour adds a little more on top.
Coming home (clockwise): from about 15:30 on weekdays the Dartford Crossing queue often backs up past J2 towards J3. When it does, we leave at J3 and take the A20 back towards Sidcup and Bexley.
Pickup buffers we use
| Leaving Bexley | Time we allow to Heathrow |
|---|---|
| 22:00–05:00 | 70–75 minutes |
| 05:00–06:30 | 80–85 minutes |
| Weekday 06:30–09:30 | 110–120 minutes |
| Weekday 10:00–15:00 | 85–90 minutes |
| Weekday 15:30–19:00 | 110–120 minutes |
| Friday afternoon, summer Saturdays | 105–120 minutes |
Add 5–10 minutes for Terminals 2 and 3, because of the M4 and the tunnel.
A worked example
You're flying long-haul from Terminal 3 at 10:40 on a Tuesday, and your airline wants you at the airport three hours ahead. That means being on the forecourt by 07:40. You'd leave around 06:00, ahead of the worst of the peak. We allow 85 minutes for that window and 10 minutes for the J15/M4/tunnel approach, and round down a little for Wisley. That gives a Bexley pickup of 06:05. Clear roads mean an early breakfast airside; a bad J10 still gets you there on time.
Heathrow Terminal Drop-Off Rules for 2026
Getting onto each forecourt
- Terminal 2: off Constellation Way and up the ramp.
- Terminal 3: via Cosmopolitan Way onto Camborne Road, with four drop-off lanes.
- Terminal 4: via Stratford Road, with three lanes at the top of the ramp.
- Terminal 5: via Wayfarer Road, with two lanes at the top of the ramp. These fill quickly at busy times.
- Terminal 1: closed.
The charge
Since 1 January 2026, every vehicle stopping on a Heathrow departures forecourt pays £7 per visit, with a maximum stay of 10 minutes. The charge covers taxis and private hire as well as private cars. You can't pay at the terminal. Payment is online or by phone, by 23:59 the following day. If it isn't paid, Heathrow issues an £80 Penalty Charge Notice, reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days.
With us, the £7 is included in your fare. We settle it ourselves, so there's no separate bill and no chance of a PCN landing on you later.
Blue Badge holders get a 100% discount on each drop-off, but only if the exemption is applied for in advance. Mention your badge when you book and we'll help you get it in place.
Coming back: arrivals pickup
We track your inbound flight and send the driver for when you actually land. Your 60 minutes' free waiting starts at touchdown. The driver messages you a meeting point when you land. Ask for meet and greet and the driver will be in the arrivals hall holding a board with your name.
How the Train Compares
The rail options from Bexley
All times are typical. Check National Rail or TfL on the day.
- Via London Bridge: Southeastern from Bexley station (Sidcup line) to London Bridge, about 25–30 minutes. Then Thameslink to Farringdon, then the Elizabeth line west to Heathrow.
- Via Abbey Wood: pick up the Elizabeth line at Abbey Wood, about 60–70 minutes to Heathrow T2&3 from there. Some trains run through to Heathrow and others need a change at Paddington. Abbey Wood isn't on the Sidcup line, so from Bexley you need a bus or a change of train to get there.
- Heathrow Express: about 15 minutes from Paddington at a premium fare, once you've reached Paddington.
- Door to terminal: typically 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, with at least one change, plus extra time if you're flying from T4 or T5.
When a taxi is the better choice
- Splitting the fare. Fixed fares get cheaper per person as the group grows:
- Saloon (sedan) £82 ÷ 4 = £30.75 each
- MPV £92 ÷ 6 = about £28.17 each
- 8-seater £123 ÷ 7 = about £27.57 each
- 9-seater £131 ÷ 8 = about £25.13 each
- Long-haul luggage. Getting two big cases and a carry-on through London Bridge, Farringdon and an Elizabeth line platform in the rush hour is hard going.
- Dawn departures. For an early long-haul flight you need to be on the forecourt before the first useful train connections from Bexley run. Our night fares are the same as our daytime fares.
- Weekend engineering works. Closures on the Sidcup line or the core Elizabeth line tunnels are common. On the road, we can always find another way.
On your own with a backpack at midday, the train is sensible. For families, groups, early flights and heavy long-haul luggage, door-to-door makes more sense.

EU Entry/Exit System (EES): what travellers ask
How early should I get to a European airport for my flight home?
ABTA advises arriving at least two hours before departure, because the EES exit check can add time at busy airports.
My flight home might land late because of EES queues. What happens to my transfer?
Give your flight number when you book, so the driver can follow the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one.
Does EES registration cost anything?
No. EES registration is free and happens at the border. Be wary of websites that charge for "EES registration"; there is nothing to buy in advance.
Do I need ETIAS as well?
Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.
EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the EU Travel to Europe site before you travel.
