Route & Real-World Timing: Sevenoaks to Heathrow
The numbers
- Distance: about 45 miles from Sevenoaks station to Terminal 5.
- Clear-road time: about 54 minutes. That's what you can expect late at night, very early in the morning or on a quiet Sunday.
- Everything else: add time for traffic. The buffer table further down shows how much we add.
How we drive it
- Out of town on the A224 and A25 through Riverhead and Chipstead to M25 Junction 5. From the north side of town this is the quickest way onto the motorway, and there are no motorway miles going the wrong way first.
- M25 anticlockwise from J5 to J14 or J15. This is the whole middle of the trip. We pass Godstone (J6), the M23 at Merstham (J7), Reigate (J8), Leatherhead (J9), the A3 at Wisley (J10), Chertsey (J11), the M3 at Thorpe (J12) and Staines (J13).
- The last few miles depend on your terminal:
- Terminals 4 and 5: we leave at J14 onto the A3113 Airport Way. T5 has its own spur and T4 is signed from the same exit.
- Terminals 2 and 3: we stay on to J15, go east on the M4 to Junction 4, then follow the airport spur through the central tunnel into the middle of the airport.
The driver checks your terminal against your flight number before setting off.
Where the M25 slows down
- J5, where the M26 joins. Traffic from the M26 merges right where we get on the motorway. Even outside the rush hours it can turn stop-start. Allow 5–10 minutes.
- J6 Godstone to J7 Merstham. This is the stretch we plan around most. In both peaks the M23 slip at J7 backs up into the inside lane. Between 07:00–09:30 and 16:00–19:00 we allow 15–20 minutes.
- J8 Reigate Hill. Lorries slow down on the long climb, and the lanes bunch up behind them. Allow 5–10 minutes at busy times.
- J10 Wisley (A3). Usually the slowest point on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons. Allow 10–15 minutes in those windows.
- J12, the M3 merge. Traffic heading west and to Heathrow funnels together here. Allow 5–10 minutes at peak times.
- J13 to J15 near the airport. These junctions get busy in the morning peak, especially for drivers going on to the M4 for T2 and T3.
Buffers we use when setting your pickup time
| Leaving Sevenoaks | Journey time we allow |
|---|---|
| 03:30–05:30 | 55–60 minutes |
| 05:30–06:30 | 65–70 minutes |
| Weekday 06:30–09:30 | 90–100 minutes |
| Weekday 10:00–15:00 | 70–75 minutes |
| Weekday 15:30–19:00 | 90–100 minutes |
| Fridays from 13:00, summer Saturdays | 85–95 minutes |
Worked example
Say you're flying from Terminal 3 on a Tuesday and want to be at check-in for 09:00. You'll be driving in the morning peak, so we allow 95 minutes. We also add about 10 minutes for the M4 leg and the central tunnel. Working back from 09:00, your driver collects you from Sevenoaks at about 07:15. For the same check-in time on a Sunday, a pickup around 07:55 would usually be enough.
Heathrow Terminal Drop-Off Rules 2026
Getting onto each forecourt
- Terminal 2: from Constellation Way, up the ramp to the departures forecourt.
- Terminal 3: from Cosmopolitan Way onto Camborne Road, which has 4 drop-off lanes.
- Terminal 4: from Stratford Road, with 3 lanes at the top of the ramp.
- Terminal 5: from Wayfarer Road, with 2 lanes at the top of the ramp.
- Terminal 1 is closed. Old bookings and directions that mention it are out of date.
The charge
Since 1 January 2026, every terminal forecourt at Heathrow has a £7 charge per visit, with a maximum stay of 10 minutes. Taxis and private hire cars pay it too. You can't pay at the terminal. It has to be paid online through the APCOA portal or by phone on 0330 008 5600 by 23:59 the following day. If it isn't paid, a £80 Penalty Charge Notice follows, reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days.
The £7 is included in your Taxi On The Go fare. We pay it ourselves, so you won't get a separate bill and there's no chance of a PCN arriving at your address. Unloading a couple of cases takes a few minutes, so we're well within the 10-minute limit.
- Blue Badge holders get a 100% discount on each drop-off if it's applied for in advance. Tell us when you book and we'll help you get it set up before the day.
Coming home: arrivals pickup
We track your flight, so the driver's timing follows your actual landing time, not the timetable. Your 60 minutes' free waiting begins at touchdown. That gives you time for passport control, baggage reclaim and the walk out. If you'd like the driver to meet you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, just ask.
Sevenoaks to Heathrow by Train
The usual rail routes
Times below are typical. Check National Rail and TfL on the day you travel.
- Sevenoaks to London Bridge on a fast Southeastern service: about 22–25 minutes.
- Option A: at London Bridge, change to Thameslink to Farringdon, then take the Elizabeth line to Heathrow.
- Option B: get across London to Paddington and take the Heathrow Express, which takes about 15 minutes but has a premium fare.
- Door to terminal: typically 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, with at least one change and usually two.
When the taxi is the better choice
- The per-head maths. Split the £105 saloon (sedan) fare between four people and it's £28.50 each. A full MPV at £118 works out at about £27.67 each for six. A 9-seater at £168 carrying eight is £25.75 each.- Luggage on the way. Getting suitcases through London Bridge and then down to the Elizabeth line at Farringdon is hard work in the rush hour. We load the car at your door and unload it at the kerb.
- Very early flights. Being at Heathrow before 05:00 means travelling before the trains from Sevenoaks line up. Our fares are the same at 03:30 as they are at midday.
- Late or delayed arrivals. If your flight lands late, you can miss the last good connection back to Sevenoaks. We follow the flight, and the waiting time starts when you actually land.
- Fewer things to go wrong. Each change on the rail route is another chance for a delay or engineering works to disrupt the trip. With us there's one vehicle and one driver all the way.
If you're on your own with a small bag and a midday flight, the train is a sensible choice. For families, groups, heavy luggage or a departure before 07:00, a fixed-fare car door to door is usually easier and more predictable.

EU Entry/Exit System (EES): what travellers ask
How early should I get to a European airport for my flight home?
ABTA advises arriving at least two hours before departure, because the EES exit check can add time at busy airports.
My flight home might land late because of EES queues. What happens to my transfer?
Give your flight number when you book, so the driver can follow the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one.
Does EES registration cost anything?
No. EES registration is free and happens at the border. Be wary of websites that charge for "EES registration"; there is nothing to buy in advance.
Do I need ETIAS as well?
Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.
EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the EU Travel to Europe site before you travel.
