Route & Real-World Timing: Sevenoaks to Gatwick

How far and how long

• Distance: 24.6 miles from Sevenoaks station to the South Terminal.
• Clear-road time: about 33 minutes. You get this late in the evening, overnight and on the earliest morning runs.
• Normal weekday daytime: usually 40–50 minutes, depending on how busy Junction 5 and the Godstone–Merstham stretch are.

The roads, in order

1. A224 out of Sevenoaks through Dunton Green or Riverhead, depending on where we pick you up.
2. A25 west to M25 Junction 5 (Sevenoaks/Chipstead). This is the short cut. From Sevenoaks you don't use J2 Darenth, J3 Swanley or J4 Badgers Mount, so the A2 and M20 merges that hold up journeys from Bexley and Dartford don't affect you.
3. M25 anticlockwise from J5 to J7, passing J6 Godstone (A22) and leaving at J7 Merstham for the M23.
4. M23 southbound to Junction 9. The section between J8 and J10 is a smart motorway, so expect variable speed limits and lane closures shown on the gantries.
5. Into the airport at J9. You reach the South Terminal straight off the J9 roundabout. The North Terminal is along the J9a spur. Airlines don't all use one terminal, so your driver checks your flight number before setting off.

Bottlenecks and the extra time we allow

• J5, where the M26 joins. Traffic coming from Maidstone on the M26 and from the A21 meets the anticlockwise M25 here. Weaving between lanes at this merge can slow things to stop-start even outside rush hour. On weekday mornings we add 5–10 minutes.
• J6 Godstone to J7 Merstham. This is the most predictable delay on the route. At peak times the slip road down to the M23 queues back into the inside lane. Between 07:00–09:30 and 16:00–19:00 we allow an extra 15–20 minutes.
• Village pickups on country lanes. Collections from Otford, Kemsing, Seal or Sevenoaks Weald begin on narrow lanes. They're slow, especially in the dark. We add 5–10 minutes to the pickup time for these addresses.
• Holiday peaks. Friday afternoons and summer Saturdays bring extra airport traffic onto the M25 and M23, so we allow 15–20 minutes more.

Worked example: an early short-haul flight

Say you're on a 07:15 flight to Malaga from the North Terminal. Gatwick asks you to arrive 2 hours before short-haul flights (3 hours for long-haul), so you need to be at the terminal by 05:15. You'd be leaving in the 04:00–06:00 window, so we plan 40 minutes and pick you up from central Sevenoaks at 04:35. From Kemsing or Sevenoaks Weald we'd make it 04:25.

Where the drop-off zones are

• North Terminal: on the lower level, between the Sofitel and the multi-storey car park.
• South Terminal: also on the lower level. Follow the "Drop Off" signs as you come in.
• Neither zone has barriers. ANPR cameras record each car's number plate as it enters and leaves.

The charge

Since 6 January 2026, both terminals charge £10 for the first 10 minutes, then £1 for every extra minute. The daily maximum is £30, and you can't stay longer than 30 minutes. You pay online, by phone on 0330 174 4503, or through an AutoPay account, and the deadline is midnight the day after your visit. If it isn't paid, a Parking Charge Notice is issued. Times24 runs the scheme.

With Taxi On The Go, the drop-off charge is already in your fare. We pay it ourselves, so you get no separate bill and you can't get a PCN for it. Unloading cases at the kerb normally takes a few minutes, well within the first 10.

• Blue Badge holders: you don't pay the charge, but the car must be pre-registered with Times24 before the journey. Let us know when you book and we'll send you the vehicle registration to use.
• If someone else is dropping you off, Gatwick's Long Stay car parks give 2 hours free, with a free shuttle bus to the terminals.

Picking you up when you land

We track your flight, so the driver works to your actual landing time, not the timetable. Your 60 minutes' free waiting starts at touchdown, which covers passport control, baggage reclaim and a slow luggage belt. If you'd like your driver to wait in arrivals with a name board, just ask. We send your driver's name, car and registration the evening before you travel.

Sevenoaks to Gatwick by Train vs Taxi

All rail times below are typical. Check National Rail on the day, because engineering works and timetable changes happen often.

Option 1: via London Bridge

1. Sevenoaks to London Bridge on a fast Southeastern service: typically 22–25 minutes.
2. Thameslink from London Bridge to Gatwick Airport: typically 30–35 minutes.
3. Door to terminal: typically 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes. That includes getting to Sevenoaks station and waiting for the connection at London Bridge.

Option 2: cross-country via Tonbridge and Redhill

This route keeps you out of London. You go Sevenoaks to Tonbridge, then take the line west to Redhill, then a Southern service down to Gatwick. That's two changes, and the total time depends on how well the connections line up. Check the journey planner before relying on it.

Gatwick's railway station is next to the South Terminal. If you're flying from the North Terminal, take the free inter-terminal shuttle.

When a taxi is the better choice

• Luggage. Getting a family's cases from one platform to another at London Bridge, or across two changes at Tonbridge and Redhill, is hard work. By taxi, the cases go in the boot at your door and come out at the terminal.
• Groups. Our fixed fare is for the whole car, not per passenger:
  • Saloon (sedan), £55, four people: £18.75 each
  • Saloon (sedan), two people: £37.50 each
  • MPV, £62, six people: £19 each
  • 9-seater, £88, eight people: about £17.60 each
  • Early flights. For a 06:00 departure you need to be at the airport by about 04:00, and the train connections from Sevenoaks don't work at that time. Our early-morning fare is the same as our daytime fare.
  • Late arrivals. If your evening flight is delayed, you can miss the last good connection home, particularly on the cross-country route. We follow the flight, and your free hour of waiting starts when you land.
  • Village addresses. From Otford, Kemsing, Seal or Weald, you'd need a lift or a taxi just to get to the station. Being picked up at home cuts that step out.

Rail works well for one person with hand luggage travelling in the middle of the day. For families, groups, heavy bags, or any flight before 07:00, a fixed-fare car is usually simpler and often costs less per person.
