Route & Real-World Timing: Orpington to Heathrow

Distance and drive time

  • Distance: roughly 51 miles, Orpington station to Terminal 5.
  • Clear-road drive: about 61 minutes. You'll usually see this before 05:30, late in the evening or on a quiet Sunday.
  • Any other time: we add a buffer. The table below shows the times we actually work to.

The route we take

  1. A232 and A224 out of Orpington. From the station we head down Court Road on the A224 towards Hewitts Roundabout, where the A21, the A224 and M25 Junction 4 meet.
  2. M25 anticlockwise from J4. From here it's one motorway: past Sevenoaks (J5), Godstone (J6), the M23 at Merstham (J7), Reigate (J8), Leatherhead (J9), Wisley (J10), Chertsey (J11), the M3 at Thorpe (J12) and Staines (J13).
  3. Which exit depends on your terminal:
    • Terminals 4 and 5: off at J14 onto the A3113 Airport Way. T5 has its own spur, and T4 is signed from the same junction.
    • Terminals 2 and 3: on to J15, then east along the M4 to Junction 4, and in on the airport spur through the central tunnel.

There is a cross-London alternative via the A232, A23 and A217, but it's slower in traffic, so we only use it when there's a reason to. Before setting off, your driver checks your terminal against your flight number.

Bottlenecks and the time we allow for them

  • J4, Hewitts Roundabout. At peak times the roundabout itself can hold you up before you're even on the motorway. We allow 5–10 minutes in the rush hours.
  • J5, where the M26 joins. Traffic merging from the M26 makes the inside lanes stop-start. We allow 5–10 minutes.
  • J6 to J7. This is the stretch we watch most closely. In both peaks the M23 slip at Merstham backs up into lane one. Weekdays 07:00–09:30 and 16:00–19:00 we allow 15–20 minutes.
  • J8, Reigate Hill. HGVs slow down on the long climb and the lanes bunch behind them. We allow 5–10 minutes at busy times.
  • J10, Wisley (A3). Typically the slowest point on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons. In those windows we allow 10–15 minutes.
  • J12, the M3 merge. Westbound and Heathrow traffic squeeze together here. At peak we allow 5–10 minutes.

03:30–05:3060–65 minutes
05:30–06:3070–80 minutes
Weekday 06:30–09:3095–105 minutes

Weekday 15:30–19:0095–105 minutes
Fridays after 13:00, summer Saturdays90–100 minutes

For T2 or T3 we add about 10 minutes for the M4 leg and the tunnel.

Worked example

You're flying from Terminal 5 on a Wednesday and want to reach bag drop by 07:30. A pickup around 06:00 falls in the early band, but the later part of the drive runs into the morning build-up near J10–J14, so we plan on 80 minutes. Counting back from 07:30, your driver arrives in Orpington at 06:10. If you're flying from Terminal 3 at the same time, we'd make it 06:00 to cover the M4 and the central tunnel.

Heathrow Terminal Drop-Off Rules 2026

Forecourt access by terminal

  • Terminal 2: turn off Constellation Way and go up the ramp to departures.
  • Terminal 3: take Cosmopolitan Way onto Camborne Road, which has 4 lanes.
  • Terminal 4: come in from Stratford Road. There are 3 lanes at the top of the ramp.
  • Terminal 5: come in via Wayfarer Road. There are 2 lanes at the top of the ramp.
  • Terminal 1 is closed. If an old confirmation or sat-nav sends you there, it's out of date.

The £7 forecourt charge

  • Since 1 January 2026: every departures forecourt has a £7 charge per visit, and you can stay no more than 10 minutes. Taxis and private hire cars pay it like everyone else.
  • How it's paid: online through the APCOA portal or by phone on 0330 008 5600, by 23:59 the following day. There's no way to pay at the terminal.
  • If it's missed: an £80 PCN, cut to £40 if paid within 14 days.

The charge is included in your fare. We settle it, so there's no separate bill and no risk of a PCN coming to you. Unloading takes a few minutes, which keeps us well inside the 10-minute limit.

Blue Badge holders

A 100% discount applies to each drop-off if it's applied for in advance. Tell us when you book and we'll help you get that sorted before you travel.

Arrivals: getting you home

We track your flight, so your driver times the pickup to your actual landing. 60 minutes' free waiting starts at touchdown, which covers passport control, baggage reclaim and the walk to the meeting point. If you'd like your driver waiting inside the hall with a name board, ask when you book.

Taxi or train

Orpington to Heathrow by Train

The rail route

These times are typical. Check National Rail and TfL on the day.

  1. Orpington to London Bridge on a fast Southeastern train: typically 15–20 minutes.
  2. Thameslink from London Bridge to Farringdon.
  3. Elizabeth line from Farringdon to Heathrow.
  4. Door to terminal: typically 1 hour 35 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes, with two changes.

The Heathrow Express from Paddington takes about 15 minutes, but it costs a premium fare and you have to get to Paddington first.

Per-head costs with our fixed fares

  • Saloon (sedan), £76, four passengers: £23 each.
  • MPV, £85, six passengers: about £22.83 each.
  • 8-seater, £114, seven passengers: £25 each.
  • 9-seater minibus, £122, eight passengers: about £22.88 each.

Where the car comes out ahead

  • Luggage. Two changes means taking cases through London Bridge and down to the Elizabeth line platforms at Farringdon. With us, the bags go in the boot at your door and come out at the kerb.
  • Early departures. For check-in before 06:00 you'd be relying on the first trains of the day. Our fare at 04:00 is the same as at noon.
  • Late landings. If your flight is delayed, the last convenient trains back to Orpington may have gone. We follow the flight, and your waiting time runs from when you actually land.
  • Fewer connections. Each change is another place where a delay or engineering works can knock your plans out. A car is one vehicle and one driver the whole way.

If you're travelling alone with a small bag and a midday flight, the train makes sense. If you're a family, a group, carrying heavy luggage or leaving at dawn, a fixed fare from your front door is usually the simpler choice.

Good to know

Orpington to Heathrow Airport taxi — questions

How much is a taxi from Orpington to Heathrow Airport?

From £76 one way in a saloon (sedan) for up to four passengers, fixed when you book. An executive car is from £103, an MPV from £85, an 8-seater from £114 and a 9-seater minibus from £122. The Heathrow drop-off charge is included.

How long does it take to get from Orpington to Heathrow Airport?

Usually 60–95 min for about 51 miles. Early mornings are at the quick end, weekday peaks at the slow end, and we plan your pickup with that margin.

Which terminal will you drop me at?

The one your airline uses. We check it from your flight number, and the Heathrow drop-off charge is included.

Can you pick me up from Heathrow Airport and take me to Orpington?

Yes, at any hour. Give us your flight number and we track it, with 60 minutes' free waiting from touchdown.

Are child seats and larger vehicles available?

Yes. Child seats and boosters are free, and we have MPVs, 8-seaters and 9-seater minibuses, plus executive Mercedes cars. Tell us when you book.

Is the price fixed from Orpington?

Yes. The fare is agreed before you travel and does not change with traffic, the time of day or delays at the airport.

EU Entry/Exit System (EES): what travellers ask

How early should I get to a European airport for my flight home?

ABTA advises arriving at least two hours before departure, because the EES exit check can add time at busy airports.

My flight home might land late because of EES queues. What happens to my transfer?

Give your flight number when you book, so the driver can follow the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one.

Does EES registration cost anything?

No. EES registration is free and happens at the border. Be wary of websites that charge for "EES registration"; there is nothing to buy in advance.

Do I need ETIAS as well?

Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.

EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the EU Travel to Europe site before you travel.
