Route and Real-World Timing: Bromley to Gatwick
Distance and clear-road time
- Cross-country route: 25.8 miles, about 45 minutes on a clear road.
- Motorway alternative: 35 miles, about 50 minutes on a clear road.
- The extra 9 miles on the motorway route cost only about 5 minutes, because most of it is on the M25 rather than on suburban roads with traffic lights.
Route one: cross-country to M25 Junction 6 (our usual choice)
- B228 / B251 out of Bromley, south through Hayes and West Wickham.
- A2022 across Addington.
- B269 / B270 south to meet the A22.
- A22 to M25 Junction 6 (Godstone).
- M25 anticlockwise for the short hop from J6 to J7 (Merstham).
- M23 southbound to J9. The J8–J10 stretch is a smart motorway with variable limits.
- South Terminal straight off the J9 roundabout; North Terminal via the J9a spur.
I use this route for most daytime runs. It is shorter and means only one M25 junction.
Route two: A21 to M25 Junction 4
- A21 south through Bromley Common and Farnborough.
- M25 Junction 4 (Badgers Mount) at Hewitts Roundabout.
- M25 anticlockwise past J5 (Sevenoaks), J6 (Godstone) and J7.
- M23 to J9, as above.
I switch to this route at night, when there are roadworks or a closure on the cross-country lanes, or when live traffic shows Hayes and West Wickham backed up. It is more motorway and steadier, even though it's longer. I check both before setting off.
Bottlenecks and what to add
- Bromley town centre and Masons Hill / A21 Bromley Common, weekday mornings. Getting out of town is often the slowest part. Add 10–15 minutes between about 07:00 and 09:30.
- Hewitts Roundabout (M25 J4 / A21 / A224) at peak times. This only matters on route two. Add 5–10 minutes in the rush hours.
- J5, where M26 traffic joins the M25. Also route two only. Merging traffic causes stop-start, even outside the peaks.
- M25 J6 to J7 and the M23 slip at J7. Both routes go through here, and it is the stretch I watch most closely. It slows in both rush hours. Add 15–20 minutes between 07:00–09:30 and 16:00–19:00.
- Fridays and summer Saturdays. Gatwick holiday traffic builds early. Add 20–30 minutes to whatever the normal window would be.
Pickup buffers by departure window
| Leaving Bromley | Time we allow to the terminal |
|---|---|
| 04:00–06:00 | 50 minutes |
| 06:00–07:00 | 55–60 minutes |
| Weekday 07:00–09:30 | 80–85 minutes |
| Weekday 09:30–15:30 | 60–65 minutes |
| Weekday 15:30–19:00 | 80–85 minutes |
| Friday from 13:00 / summer Saturdays | 80–90 minutes |
| After 20:00, Sunday mornings | 50 minutes |
Worked example
Gatwick advises arriving 2 hours before a short-haul flight and 3 hours before long-haul. Say you're on an 11:15 short-haul departure on a Tuesday:
- At the terminal by 09:15.
- That means leaving in the weekday 07:00–09:30 window, so we allow 80 minutes.
- Pickup in Bromley: 07:55.
The same flight on a Sunday would mean a 08:25 pickup. We confirm the time with you when you book, and again the evening before.
Gatwick Terminal Drop-Off Rules for 2026
The drop-off zones
- North Terminal: lower level, between the Sofitel and the multi-storey car park.
- South Terminal: lower level, following the "Drop Off" signs from the approach road.
- Airlines are split between the two terminals, so I check your flight number rather than guessing.
What Gatwick charges
- Since 6 January 2026: £10 for the first 10 minutes, then £1 for each extra minute.
- Daily maximum £30, and a maximum stay of 30 minutes.
- The same charge applies at both terminals.
- No barriers. ANPR cameras record every number plate on the way in and out.
Paying, and what happens if you don't
- The charge is paid online, by phone on 0330 174 4503, or through an AutoPay account, by midnight the day after the visit.
- If it's not paid, a Parking Charge Notice follows. The scheme is run by Times24.
It's in our fare
The Gatwick drop-off charge is included in your Taxi On The Go fare. We settle it ourselves. You won't get a separate bill, and there's no risk of a PCN arriving weeks later. Unloading a couple of cases takes a few minutes, so a normal drop-off stays inside the first 10-minute charge.
Blue Badge holders
Blue Badge drop-offs are exempt from the charge, but the vehicle has to be pre-registered with Times24. Tell us when you book and we'll give you the registration of the car coming to you.
Coming home: arrivals pickup
- We track your flight, so a delay doesn't cost you anything.
- 60 minutes' free waiting starts at touchdown, not at the scheduled landing time.
- You get the driver's name, car and registration the evening before.
- A meet-and-greet name board in arrivals is available on request.
Bromley to Gatwick by Train: How It Compares
The rail route (typical times; check National Rail or TfL on the day)
- Bromley South to London Victoria: typically 17–20 minutes.
- Victoria to Gatwick Airport on the Gatwick Express or Southern: typically 30–35 minutes.
- Door to terminal: typically 1 hour 05 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, counting the trip to Bromley South and the change at Victoria.
Gatwick's station is beside the South Terminal. North Terminal passengers take the free inter-terminal shuttle on top of that.
To be fair, the train is a strong option from Bromley South. It goes in towards London and back out again, but it's quick. For one person with a carry-on in the middle of the day, it works well.
When a taxi is the better choice
- Groups, worked out per head on our fixed fares:
- Saloon (sedan) £65 ÷ 4 = £34.75 each
- MPV £73 ÷ 6 = £29.50 each
- 8-seater £98 ÷ 7 = £28.00 each
- 9-seater £104 ÷ 8 = £25.63 each
Each of those prices covers the whole trip from your door to the terminal, with the drop-off charge included.- Luggage and children. Victoria at rush hour, with suitcases, a buggy and a ticket barrier to get through, is a different trip from the one the timetable describes.- Early flights. A 06:30 departure means being at Gatwick by about 04:30. A taxi leaving Bromley at around 03:40 gets you there in time, at the same fare as a daytime run.- Late arrivals. If your evening flight lands late, the onward trip through Victoria and Bromley South gets harder as the night goes on. We track the flight and wait, and the first hour from touchdown is free.- Engineering works. Weekend closures on the line through Victoria affect the train. The road has two routes into Gatwick, as described above.

Yes, at any hour. Give us your flight number and we track it, with 60 minutes' free waiting from touchdown.

EES and your airport transfer
How early should I get to a European airport for my flight home?
ABTA advises arriving at least two hours before departure, because the EES exit check can add time at busy airports.
My flight home might land late because of EES queues. What happens to my transfer?
Give your flight number when you book, so the driver can follow the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one.
How does EES affect the 90/180-day rule?
EES records every entry and exit digitally instead of relying on passport stamps, so days spent in the Schengen area are counted automatically and overstays are flagged.
Do I need ETIAS as well?
Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.
EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the EU Travel to Europe site before you travel.
