OLD KENT ROAD

How the driver gets from the A2 to Terminus Place

Victoria sits on the wrong side of the West End for the Blackwall Tunnel, so the default route stays south of the river. From Dartford the car joins the A2 at Princes Road, passes Danson and Falconwood, and leaves at New Cross for the Old Kent Road. That leads to the Bricklayers Arms and the Elephant, then Kennington Lane to Vauxhall Cross, over Vauxhall Bridge and up Vauxhall Bridge Road to the station.

When the Old Kent Road is dug up, the driver may use the Blackwall Tunnel, the Limehouse Link and the Embankment to Millbank instead — longer in miles, sometimes quicker mid-morning.

Drop-off points

  • The railway station — the forecourt on Terminus Place, in front of the main concourse, with the Gatwick Express platforms a short walk inside.
  • Victoria Coach Station — departures are on Buckingham Palace Road; the driver pulls in on the Elizabeth Street side, the nearest kerb to the coach gates.
  • Hotels — Belgravia, Pimlico and Grosvenor Gardens are the same fare.
COACHES DO NOT WAIT

Timing a pickup for the coach station or the Gatwick Express

National Express and FlixBus close boarding a few minutes before the printed departure, and the coach gates are a walk from the road, so build in ten minutes on top of the drive. The Gatwick Express runs every quarter of an hour, which softens a missed train, but a 05:00 coach to Manchester has no next one.

Departure from VictoriaPickup in Dartford
Coach before 06:301h 15m before
Coach or train 06:30–09:301h 50m before
Midday to mid-afternoon1h 30m before
Evening peak 16:00–19:001h 55m before
After 20:001h 10m before

Vauxhall Bridge Road is the pinch point in the morning; Old Kent Road is the one in the afternoon. Bromley, Sidcup and Bexleyheath are ten minutes closer than Dartford; Gravesend is fifteen further out. Catching Southern to Brighton on a booked seat? Treat it like the coach and use the longer margin.

CAR OR SOUTHEASTERN

Taxi versus the train from Dartford station

Southeastern runs from Dartford to Victoria in around 40 minutes, and for a solo traveller in daylight that is a fair option. People book a car instead for practical reasons.

The trains have not started

Coaches at 04:30 and 05:00 leave before the first service from Dartford, and the night bus is no plan with luggage.

Suitcases and the coach walk

Platforms to coach station is ten minutes on foot along Buckingham Palace Road. The car drops you at the coach station door.

Three or four of you

Four peak rail fares from Dartford exceed £65, and you still need a cab to the station.

Engineering weekends

When the line is bussed between Dartford and Lewisham the car keeps its timetable.

The fare is fixed when we confirm it, so a crawl past the Elephant costs nothing extra. Firms in Crossways and the Dartford business parks sending staff to Victoria use an invoiced account.

BACK TO KENT

Getting collected from Victoria late in the evening

The last coach in from Paris, the Gatwick Express after a delayed flight, or a show ending at the Apollo Victoria — all three leave people on Wilton Road looking for a way back to Dartford after the trains have thinned out. Pre-book and it is already arranged.

For coach arrivals give us the service number and the driver watches the coach station's arrival information rather than the timetable. Coaches arrive at the Elizabeth Street building, separate from departures, and the driver waits on that side. For rail arrivals the pickup is the Terminus Place forecourt, and a text with the registration reaches you before you are off the platform.

Parents collecting students off the coach sometimes ask for a named board; that is a guide £10 on request. Waiting is free for 15 minutes from the tracked arrival. Other termini: Dartford to Waterloo and Dartford to Paddington.

Dartford to Victoria taxi — questions

How much is a taxi from Dartford to Victoria?

From £65 one way in a saloon (sedan), ULEZ included, to either the railway station or the coach station. Bromley is from £45, Sidcup £48, Bexleyheath £50, Greenhithe and Swanley £58 and Gravesend £66. An MPV from Dartford starts at £73, an 8-seater at £99.

Can you drop me at Victoria Coach Station rather than the railway station?

Yes, and it is the same price. The coach departures building is on Buckingham Palace Road, and the driver pulls up on the Elizabeth Street side, which is the closest kerb to the gates. Tell us the coach operator and time so we can plan the margin.

How early should I leave Dartford for an early coach from Victoria?

For a coach before 06:30, an hour and a quarter is plenty on empty roads. Between 06:30 and 09:30 allow an hour and fifty minutes for Vauxhall Bridge Road. Boarding closes before the printed time, so the extra ten minutes matters.

Is a taxi to Victoria worth it when Southeastern goes there directly?

For one person mid-morning, probably not. It is worth it before the first train, for three or four people with cases, when you need the coach station rather than the platforms, and on weekends when the line is on replacement buses.

Which way does the driver go — Blackwall Tunnel or south of the river?

South of the river is the default: A2, Old Kent Road, Elephant and Castle, Vauxhall Bridge Road. When the Old Kent Road is congested the driver may use the Blackwall Tunnel and the Embankment instead. Either way the fare does not change.

Where will the driver meet me when my coach arrives at Victoria?

Coach arrivals use the Elizabeth Street building, separate from departures. The driver waits on that side and texts the registration once the coach is shown as arrived. For train arrivals the meeting point is the forecourt on Terminus Place.

Do you cover the Gatwick Express at Victoria, or should I just go to Gatwick?

Both work. Going to Gatwick itself, the direct run is from £75 and quicker than Victoria plus the train. Victoria makes sense when you are meeting others there or continuing into town.

Is the ULEZ charge extra?

No. Everything from the Bexley border inwards is inside the zone, so the charge is built into the £65 rather than added on the day. No Dart Charge either, as the crossing is not used.

How to choose. Public transport wins on price for one traveller with hand luggage at 10am. A taxi usually wins when there are two or more of you (one fare for the car, not per person), when you have hold bags or a pushchair, for flights before the first train arrives or landings after the last one leaves, and when a change of train or a station without lifts would be a problem. Rail fares above are per adult; add £4–£6 per person for the DART/shuttle where shown, and remember engineering work most weekends.
