The journey

Route and Real-World Timing: Dartford to Heathrow

The numbers

  • Distance: roughly 56 miles (55.8) from Dartford station to Terminal 5.
  • Clear-road time: about 65 minutes. You get that late at night, very early in the morning or on a quiet Sunday.

Road by road

  1. A226 East Hill out of the town centre, then A296 Princes Road heading east towards the motorway.
  2. Join the M25 at Junction 2 (Darenth Interchange) and head anticlockwise, which takes you south and then west.
  3. M25 J2 to J14 in one go.
  4. Your exit depends on your terminal. We check it against your flight number before the driver sets off:
    • Terminals 4 and 5: leave at J14 onto the A3113 Airport Way. Terminal 5 has its own spur off that road.
    • Terminals 2 and 3: stay on to J15, take the M4 east to Junction 4, then follow the airport spur through the central tunnel into the middle of the airport.

The fallback: clockwise via the Dartford Crossing

The other way round is to go clockwise over the Dartford Crossing and along the northern M25. That route is about 68 miles and takes around 78 minutes on a clear road, and it adds a Dart Charge. We only use it when the southern M25 is shut or badly blocked. If we switch, the driver tells you why.

Where the delays are, and what we allow

  • The approach to J2 on weekday mornings. A2 traffic from Bexley and Crayford merges with local Dartford traffic at Darenth. Allow 10–15 extra minutes between 07:00 and 09:30.
  • J3 Swanley. Traffic coming up the M20 joins here and slows the inside lanes in both peaks.
  • J5, where the M26 comes in. Lane changes at the merge cause stop-start traffic, sometimes even at midday.
  • J6 to J7 and the M23 slip. This is a regular queue in both rush hours. The slip queue blocks lane 1.
  • J8 Reigate Hill. Lorries slow down on the climb, and the whole carriageway bunches up behind them.
  • J10 Wisley (A3). Usually the worst point of the whole trip on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons. Allow 15–20 minutes at those times.
  • J12 (M3 merge) and J13–J15 around Heathrow. Airport, M3 and M4 traffic all meet here, and it's slowest in the morning peak.
  • Coming home. Heading clockwise on weekday afternoons, the queue for the Dartford Crossing often reaches back past J2 towards J3 from about 15:30. Your driver leaves at J2 and uses the local roads into Dartford, so you don't sit in the crossing queue.

Buffers we use when setting your pickup time

06:00–07:0075 minutes
Weekday 07:00–09:30100–110 minutes

Weekday 15:30–19:00100–110 minutes
Fridays from 13:00, summer Saturdays95–105 minutes

A worked example

Say you're flying long-haul from Terminal 5 on a Tuesday at 11:15, and your airline wants you at the terminal three hours before. That means arriving at 08:15, right in the morning peak. We work back 105 minutes from 08:15, which puts your Dartford pickup at 06:30. A clear M25 gets you there early; a jammed Wisley still gets you there on time.

Heathrow Terminal Drop-Off Rules for 2026

How we reach each forecourt

  • Terminal 2: off Constellation Way, then up the ramp to the departures forecourt.
  • Terminal 3: along Cosmopolitan Way onto Camborne Road, which has four lanes at the kerb.
  • Terminal 4: via Stratford Road, which has three lanes at the top of the ramp.
  • Terminal 5: via Wayfarer Road, which has two lanes at the top of the ramp.
  • Terminal 1 is closed.

The forecourt charge

Since 1 January 2026, every terminal forecourt has charged £7 per visit, with a maximum stay of 10 minutes. It applies to taxis and private hire as well as private cars. You can't pay at the terminal. The charge is paid online through the operator's portal or by phone by 23:59 the following day. If it isn't paid, it brings an £80 PCN, reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days.

This charge is included in your Taxi On The Go fare. We settle it ourselves, so you get no separate bill and there's no risk of a PCN arriving later.

Blue Badge holders: Heathrow gives a 100% discount if you apply in advance for each drop-off. Tell us when you book and we'll give you the vehicle registration you'll need.

Collecting you from arrivals

We track your flight and send the driver for the time you actually land. You get 60 minutes' free waiting from touchdown. The driver messages you with a meeting point. If you ask, they'll wait in the arrivals hall holding a name board.

Taxi or train

Dartford to Heathrow by Train

Option 1: North Kent line to Abbey Wood, then the Elizabeth line

  1. Dartford to Abbey Wood on a Southeastern North Kent line train. Dartford services call there directly.
  2. Elizabeth line from Abbey Wood to Heathrow. Some trains run right through to the airport, and others need a change at Paddington. Abbey Wood to Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 takes roughly 60–70 minutes.

Option 2: via London Bridge

  1. Dartford to London Bridge: around 35–40 minutes.
  2. Thameslink to Farringdon, then change to the Elizabeth line for Heathrow.

Option 3: Heathrow Express

If you can get to Paddington, the Heathrow Express takes about 15 minutes from there. It costs a premium fare on top of the trip into London.

Door to terminal: by any of these routes, expect a typical 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, with at least one change. Typical times: check National Rail or TfL on the day.

When the taxi makes more sense

  • Shared cost. Split our fixed fare and it comes to roughly £27 each for four in a saloon (sedan) (£82), about £26.33 each for six in an MPV (£92) and £24.50 each for eight in the 9-seater (£131).
  • Cases and children. A change at Abbey Wood or Paddington with suitcases, a buggy and tired kids is hard going. We load at your front door and unload at the kerb.
  • Early starts. A dawn check-in means leaving Dartford before the useful rail connections line up. We charge the same at 04:00 as at noon.
  • Your own terminal's kerb. The rail times above are to Terminals 2 & 3. By road we drop you at whichever terminal your airline uses.
  • Getting home. After a delayed evening landing, the last good connections back to Dartford may already have gone. We track the flight and wait.

The train is a sensible choice for one person with a cabin bag on a midday flight. For families, groups, early flights and anyone with real luggage, a car from your door is the steadier option.

Dartford to Heathrow Airport taxi — questions

How much is a taxi from Dartford to Heathrow Airport?

From £82 one way in a saloon (sedan) for up to four passengers, fixed when you book. An executive car is from £111, an MPV from £92, an 8-seater from £123 and a 9-seater minibus from £131. The Heathrow drop-off charge is included.

How long does it take to get from Dartford to Heathrow Airport?

Usually 65–95 min for about 56 miles. Early mornings are at the quick end, weekday peaks at the slow end, and we plan your pickup with that margin.

Which terminal will you drop me at?

The one your airline uses. We check it from your flight number, and the Heathrow drop-off charge is included.

Can you pick me up from Heathrow Airport and take me to Dartford?

Yes, at any hour. Give us your flight number and we track it, with 60 minutes' free waiting from touchdown.

Are child seats and larger vehicles available?

Yes. Child seats and boosters are free, and we have MPVs, 8-seaters and 9-seater minibuses, plus executive Mercedes cars. Tell us when you book.

Is the price fixed from Dartford?

Yes. The fare is agreed before you travel and does not change with traffic, the time of day or delays at the airport.

EU Entry/Exit System (EES): what travellers ask

How early should I get to a European airport for my flight home?

ABTA advises arriving at least two hours before departure, because the EES exit check can add time at busy airports.

My flight home might land late because of EES queues. What happens to my transfer?

Give your flight number when you book, so the driver can follow the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one.

Does EES registration cost anything?

No. EES registration is free and happens at the border. Be wary of websites that charge for "EES registration"; there is nothing to buy in advance.

Do I need ETIAS as well?

Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.

EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the EU Travel to Europe site before you travel.
